Kelvedon Hatch

Brentwood's bigger drive, with fields for a moat·Essex·East of England

Kelvedon Hatch is what Brentwood looks like after it has bought the bigger drive and moved up the road to be nearer fields it mostly admires through a windscreen. Chips Channon, a man who made a career of writing down what his neighbours got up to, bought the hall here, so the village has always appealed to people who like a good look at the house next door. The houses are mostly post-war, the cars mostly come in pairs, and the Green Belt does the work of making sure nobody can ever build the house next door. Sarah Kane once hid behind the village's name as a pen name, and it is hard to think of a better disguise than somewhere this determined to stay out of the conversation.
