Ingatestone

Where London's commuters go to pretend they're villagers·Essex·East of England

Ingatestone is named after a lump of glacial stone, which now lies in three pieces around the village like heirlooms nobody would dream of selling. The coaches stopped changing horses here once the railway arrived, so the village found a new job as the place the railway's commuters go home to sleep. The liveliest the High Street has been this century was a police raid that found cannabis growing in a pub, and even that has since been turned into a tasteful mews.
