Theydon Bois

A forest village that bought a tube ticket·Essex·East of England

Theydon Bois is a forest village with a Central line station, and everyone who bought there knows the station is what they paid for. The railway asked a parish clerk how to spell it, he had a bit of French and a forest next door, and so a name meaning "thatch valley" ended up with "Bois" and a pronunciation outsiders get wrong for years. People move in for the green and the forest at the end of the road, then spend every dinner party explaining that it rhymes with "boys". Loughton and Epping are a mile either side, close enough for the shopping and far enough away to feel a bit superior about it.
