Loughton

Essex with a Tube pass and a full-length mirror·Essex·East of England

Loughton has a Tube station, a London commute and an Essex address, and it guards all three like a family inheritance. When the Victorians tried to build over the forest, a labourer called Thomas Willingale fought them for the right to chop firewood, and the town got a public hall named after the chopping as compensation, which is about as English as a settlement gets. With trees on one side and a river that floods on the other, Loughton had nowhere to grow except upmarket, and the reality television crews followed the money to the High Road. The Bank of England once printed its banknotes in Debden, and judging by the High Road, some of them never left.
