Enfield Highway

A main road that got promoted to neighbourhood·Greater London·London

Enfield Highway is a stretch of Hertford Road that grew a postcode, and it has never once pretended to be a village. Enfield Town got the market square and the estate agents' adjectives; the Highway got the buses, the traffic and prices that people on ordinary wages can still just about reach. The factory down the road that put Enfield's name on a rifle and sent it round the world is now flats, which is about as north London as an ending gets.
