Is Kelvedon Hatch a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Kelvedon Hatch.

Kelvedon Hatch is a safe village, and a little safer than the Brentwood borough it belongs to. Crime runs about a tenth below the borough rate. Unemployment is close to nil. Hardly any homes are overcrowded. Nobody moves here for the nightlife, and the crime figures look like it.

Police recorded 324 crimes in and around the village in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 68 per 1,000 people. That puts it roughly 11% below the average for the Brentwood local authority area. The published rate is based on the population of the statistical areas the police use, which differ slightly from the village boundary, so the rate is the figure to compare and the raw count is only there for scale.

Across the Brentwood borough as a whole, the published rate for the same year was about 76 per 1,000. Set the village's 68 next to it and the gap is real without being dramatic. Both numbers belong to the same commuter belt, and the village is the calmer end of it.

The neighbourhood areas behind these figures average about 2,400 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2% and about 3% of homes are overcrowded. They describe a comfortable, owner-occupied place with plenty of space and few people out of work. None of them explains the crime figures by itself, but together they show a place with little of the pressure that usually comes before trouble.

The totals are small enough that a handful of incidents can move any share by several points, so read the mix as one year's snapshot that could easily change, not as a portrait of the village. Violence and sexual offences made up about 37% of recorded crime against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide legal range, down to common assault without injury, and here it is close to the national share. Anti-social behaviour was about 15% against 16% nationally, and public order about 6% against 7%, both slightly under. Three categories ran above their national shares: other theft at about 11% against 7%, criminal damage and arson at about 10% against 7%, and vehicle crime at about 8% against 5%. In a village where most homes sit behind a drive, the things most likely to go missing tend to be parked on one.

Essex Police, the force covering the whole county, charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% across England and Wales, which puts it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for every town and village in Essex, and they say how often a report leads to a charge, which is a different question from how often something happens here in the first place. If a ladder goes from the side return, expect the reference number sooner than the arrest.

Safety is one of Kelvedon Hatch's strong points. Crime is lower than in the borough around it, and what does get recorded tends to involve cars and property, not people.
