What are the schools like in North Weald Bassett?

For anyone buying or renting in North Weald Bassett.

North Weald Bassett's schools are good, and the county system behind them is better still. Nine in ten graded schools across Essex come out good or better. The village has its own church primary. The nearest secondary is in Epping. Walking to it takes over an hour, so the school run starts with a bus or a car.

Ofsted has graded 246 schools and other settings across Essex, and 218 of them are rated good or outstanding, close to nine in every ten. Of those, 22 hold an outstanding grade. At the other end, 23 are rated requires improvement and five inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet, and they say nothing either way about quality. Those are county-wide counts, so they describe the system a North Weald child joins, while any single school can still land above or below them.

The village school is St Andrew's CofE Primary School, a two-form-entry church primary, and alongside it the village has two nurseries and pre-schools. Essex County Council allocates places under its own published admissions rules, and a church school can add criteria of its own, so living a few streets from St Andrew's does not by itself put your child through its gates. Read the school's admissions policy for the year you would apply, along with the council's record of how far the last child offered a place lived, because that distance moves from one year to the next. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 18 minutes' walk from the typical home, or nine minutes by car. "Walking distance to the village primary" is a description of the pavement, and the admissions letter is the only part that counts.

Secondary school means leaving the village. The nearest is Epping St Johns Church of England School, and the same 2019 modelling puts a secondary about 14 minutes away by car, 27 by public transport and 65 on foot. Bus times in that modelling date faster than the road does, since services can be cut, so the school bus timetable is the figure to trust for a teenager without a lift. North Weald's teenagers learn the bus routes early, whether they want to or not.

Beyond those two, the wider list of nearby schools runs to Ivy Chimneys Primary School and Epping Primary School to the south-west, a handful of other village primaries, and independent options such as Coopersale Hall School and The Tower School. A family is choosing from a decent spread of Epping-side schools, not relying on the one in the village.

The schools are one of North Weald Bassett's real strengths, backed by a county where good schools are the norm. The catch is the hour-long walk to secondary school, and every family here plans around it.
