Bishop's Stortford

A market town with a departure lounge for a neighbour·Hertfordshire·East of England

Bishop's Stortford is a town confident enough to have had a river named after it by mistake, after sixteenth-century mapmakers assumed it had to be the other way round and nobody bothered to correct them. Charles II found the market, the maltings and the tanneries so unbearable on his way to the Newmarket races that he had the London road moved round the town. These days the airport is just over the motorway, so half the town moved here for Stansted and the other half spends its evenings writing to the council about it. Both halves will mention the schools before you've taken your coat off.
