Stansted Mountfitchet

The village everyone thinks is a car park for the airport·Essex·East of England

Stansted Mountfitchet lent its name to an airport and has spent every year since reminding people that it meant the village. A Norman lord started a castle here the year everyone remembers. Someone has since built a pretend one around what's left of it, next door to a toy museum its owners call the largest in the world, which is the kind of claim a place makes when most visitors think it's a departure lounge. The windmill opens once a month, and the planes keep rather more reliable hours.
