Who lives in Stansted Mountfitchet?

For anyone buying or renting in Stansted Mountfitchet.

Stansted Mountfitchet is mostly settled homeowners in middle age who earn well and stay put. Seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is about forty. Household incomes are comfortable before tax. Large families and empty nesters make up most of the village, and very few people are passing through.

There are 9,281 residents in 3,714 households, and about 70% of those households own their home. About 15% rent privately and about 14% rent from a social landlord. That's a large owner-occupied majority, with renting split almost evenly between private and social landlords. A tenant here has a fairly short list of places to choose from.

The median resident is 41, and about 28% of residents are aged 25 to 44. That's an older profile than the airport next door might suggest, with plenty of people in their working prime and plenty past it.

The Office for National Statistics models typical household income here at about £71,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That figure is three years old and comes before tax and National Insurance, while the house a household like that would be buying here sells for a median of about £445,000. The before-tax figure looks a lot healthier than what's left after tax.

At the 2021 census, the source for every population figure on this page, about 26% of households were couples with dependent children and about 10% were lone parents. About 25% were people living alone, and around 10% of all households were a single pensioner living alone. The village has two main groups. Families with school-age children fill the larger houses, and a smaller group of older residents live alone, many of them in homes they moved into decades ago.

About 37% of adults hold a degree or equivalent, about 13% have no formal qualifications, and only about 2% are full-time students. There's a wide spread of qualifications, and students are almost absent. A village with plenty of three- and four-bedroom houses and almost no student population is a place people move to once their own studying is long finished.

Stansted Mountfitchet's residents are one of its strengths. It's a stable, well-off, mostly owner-occupied village, and its people have little reason to leave.
