Is Stansted Mountfitchet a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Stansted Mountfitchet.

Stansted Mountfitchet is less safe than its surroundings. Its crime rate runs about a sixth above the rest of the district. Theft is overrepresented in the mix. Rowdiness is underrepresented. It's a village where people more often lose their belongings than their tempers.

Over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, the police recorded 717 crimes in Stansted Mountfitchet, and the published rate works out at about 71 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 16% above the Uttlesford average for the same twelve months. Those are the police's published figures as they stand, and the rate is calculated on its own population base, so dividing the count by the village headcount won't give you the same number.

To put the gap in numbers, the Uttlesford rate is about 62 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 71 in the village. A gap of nine per thousand is noticeable without being alarming. It's enough to put Stansted Mountfitchet on the wrong side of its own district, in a district that isn't known for crime.

On the Office for National Statistics' measures, the village averages about 4,060 residents per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. At the 2021 census unemployment was about 3% and about 2% of households were overcrowded. That's a settled, employed, roomy village, which makes the crime figure harder to explain, and nothing in that profile explains it.

The crime mix is more revealing than the total. Violence and sexual offences make up about 35% of recorded crime here, exactly the national share. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault with no injury, so it puts the village in line with the country. The differences are elsewhere. Other theft accounts for about 13% of crime here against about 7% nationally, and vehicle crime about 8% against 5%. Criminal damage and arson run at about 9% against 7%. Anti-social behaviour is about 8%, roughly half the national 16%, and shoplifting about 7% against 8%. In short, the village argues with itself less than average and has more things taken.

The police's street-level crime map is worth a look for the roads you're considering, filtered to theft and vehicle crime. Those are the two categories pushing the village above the national mix, and the map shows whether they cluster near the house you're looking at or somewhere else in the parish.

What happens once a crime is reported is a force-wide matter. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. In about 37% of cases the force closed the file with no suspect identified. Those figures describe what Essex Police does after a crime has happened, across the whole county. They say nothing about how likely a crime is in Stansted Mountfitchet.

Safety is below par here. The violence figures are ordinary, and the reason the village sits above its district is that more things get stolen.
