The schools around Stansted Mountfitchet are good, and the odds of ending up at a weak one are low. Nearly nine in ten graded schools in the county are rated good or better. Primary school is a short walk for most children. Secondary means a longer trip and more people to compete with for a place. Parents here have less to worry about than in most of the county, though that never stops them worrying.
Essex has 246 schools and other settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 218 of them are rated good or better. That's close to nine in every ten. Twenty-two are Outstanding. At the other end, 23 are rated Requires Improvement and 5 Inadequate, so the bad end of the county is small but real. Another 238 Essex settings have no published grade yet. Those are uninspected, which isn't the same as poor, and they sit outside these counts. A county-wide figure tells you the odds are good. It can't tell you whether the school at the end of your road is one of the 28 that aren't.
The village's own primary is Bentfield Primary School and Nursery, which shares its name with the Bentfield Green conservation area. Within easy reach are Birchanger Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School and Elsenham Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, along with Manuden Primary School and Henham and Ugley Primary and Nursery School in the surrounding villages. Essex County Council allocates places using its published admissions rules. Distance from the gate is only one of the criteria, so living next to Bentfield doesn't guarantee a place there. The Department for Transport's modelling, from 2019, puts the nearest primary at about an eight-minute walk from the typical home. Parents who'd planned on a short walk can end up sitting in traffic every morning.
At secondary age, Forest Hall School is the local option. Towards Bishop's Stortford there's a wider choice, including The Bishop's Stortford High School and Hockerill Anglo-European College. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary at about a 21-minute walk, about a nine-minute drive, or about 16 minutes by public transport. Bus timetables have changed since 2019, so the public transport time is the least reliable of the three. The jump from eight minutes to 21 is when children start asking for lifts and parents start looking up what the bus pass costs.
There are independent schools nearby as well, Bishop's Stortford College, White Trees Independent School and Howe Green House School among them, for families who'd rather pay fees than take their chances with admissions criteria. One former school in Takeley has closed, so ignore any older guide that still lists it.
It's worth checking one thing early. Look up how far from Forest Hall the last offered place reached in recent years, using Essex's published allocation figures. The answer will tell you more than the distance on the property listing, which measures the route to the school gate and says nothing about whether you'll get a place.
Schools are one of Stansted Mountfitchet's real strengths. The county's record is strong, the primaries are close by and there's plenty of choice at secondary, so the hard part is getting into the right school.
