Is Sawbridgeworth a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Sawbridgeworth.

Yes, Sawbridgeworth is a safe area. Its crime rate is about a fifth lower than the district around it. Unemployment is close to zero and overcrowded homes are rare. The crime it does have is mostly the ordinary stuff found in any town. Its most famous act of aggression happened after Hastings, when William the Conqueror handed the manor to Geoffrey de Mandeville, and the town has been fairly calm ever since.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded 619 crimes in Sawbridgeworth in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for the area is about 57 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 20% below the East Hertfordshire average.

That district-wide rate is about 70 per 1,000, so the gap is between 57 in the town and 70 across the district as a whole. East Hertfordshire is hardly a high-crime district to begin with, which means beating its average by that margin counts for more than it might sound.

The town is fairly built-up for a place its size, at an average of about 3,760 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment in the 2021 Census was 2%, and 2% of households were overcrowded. It is a compact, owner-occupied town where nearly everyone has work and room to live, and those figures describe the place without explaining its crime rate.

Violence and sexual offences account for about 42% of recorded crime in the town, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide legal range, including common assault where nobody was injured. Anti-social behaviour is about 21% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 9% against 5%. Other theft is level with the national share at about 7%. Criminal damage and arson, at about 6%, and public order offences, at about 5%, both run slightly below their national shares of 7%. On a total of 619 crimes, a handful of incidents can move a share by a point or two. The street-level map on the police's own crime website shows where those incidents fell, and it is worth checking for the few streets you are actually choosing between.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question from how much crime there is. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases across the force, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 40% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. That figure covers the whole force and tells you how likely someone is to be caught, not how safe Sawbridgeworth is. Mid-table, in other words, which is about where most residents would have guessed.

Sawbridgeworth is a safe town, comfortably safer than the district it belongs to, and the crime it does see is the ordinary kind.
