Mayfield (Wealden)
Mayfield is where the Archbishops of Canterbury kept a country palace, and the village has behaved ever since as if they might pop back for the weekend. The palace is a girls' school now, the high street is listed almost door to door, and the nearest railway station belongs to another village. Legend says St Dunstan grabbed the devil by the nose with blacksmith's tongs here. These days the same treatment is reserved for anyone who applies for a streetlight.
