Is Mayfield (Wealden) a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Mayfield (Wealden).

Yes, and the numbers are not close. Crime runs at almost half below the district average. Hardly anyone is out of work. Almost nobody lives crammed in. The biggest threat to a quiet life in Mayfield is a planning application next door.

Sussex Police recorded 86 crimes in Mayfield in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate works out at about 31 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 44% below the Wealden average. The figures cover everything reported, from the serious to the petty, and there is no breakdown by type here, so read it as a volume and not a description of what happens on any particular lane. As volumes go, it is a low one.

Put the two rates side by side and the gap is plain. Mayfield sits at about 31 per 1,000. Wealden as a whole, a district of about 160,000 people, sits at about 55 per 1,000. Wealden isn't a rough patch to begin with, and Mayfield still comes in well under it. Anyone reading the district average as a warning about Mayfield has the wrong place in mind.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is a thinly spread one. The average population density across Mayfield's areas is about 500 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2%, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. None of that proves why crime is low, but it describes the setting: spread-out houses, people in work, room to breathe. It is the kind of place where the loudest thing on a weekday afternoon is someone's lawnmower.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question, and here the answer is less comfortable. Sussex Police, the force covering Mayfield, charged a suspect in about 10% of cases over the twelve months to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 35th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 48% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures, not Mayfield's own, and they say nothing about how likely a crime is here. They tell you that if something does go missing from the shed, getting it back is not the likely outcome. Lock the shed.

Mayfield is one of the safest bets in the district, with crime low enough that the practical advice is locks and common sense. The weakness is what follows a report, and that belongs to the county's police force, not to the village.
