Rotherfield
Rotherfield sits on top of its hill in the High Weald looking pleased with itself, while the River Rother rises on the south slope and sets straight off for Rye, the only local ever to leave without anyone asking why. Crowborough used to be part of the parish until it went its own way, and nobody on the hilltop has visibly minded since. The railway station closed in 1965 and became a private house, which sums up the whole village: the way out got turned into somewhere nice to stay put.
