Hindhead
Hindhead spent most of the last century as the bottleneck every driver heading for Portsmouth swore at. Then in 2011 the A3 was sent into a tunnel underneath it, and the village woke up to find it had been sitting on the Devil's Punch Bowl all along. It is the highest village in Surrey, which suits a place that always looked down on the traffic. The old road has since been turned back into heather, which is the kindest thing a planning scheme has ever done to a highwayman's commute.
