Farnham

Where the state school costs private fees·Surrey·South East England

Farnham exists because a medieval Bishop of Winchester wanted somewhere decent to break the journey to London, and the town has carried itself like a superior coaching inn ever since. The castle still looks down from the top of Castle Street, some of the independents in the centre have been trading since Victoria was on the throne, and even an estate agent's office is a listed building, which tells you who won round here. Aldershot sits just up the road with the barracks and the cheaper houses, and Farnham has spent centuries acting as if the road only runs south.
