Aldershot

Aldershot is the town the Army built on a heath nobody else wanted, and it has been standing to attention ever since. Its biggest monument is a giant bronze Duke of Wellington that London decided looked ridiculous and sent here instead, which is roughly how the Home Counties have treated the place for a century and a half. Farnham up the road has the castle and the reputation; Aldershot has the barracks, the Lido and house prices that don't ask you to pretend. Plenty of people who tell their friends they live near Farnham mean here.
