Is Aldershot a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Aldershot.

Mostly, though it runs a little warmer than the rest of its borough. Crime sits a notch above the local average. Anti-social behaviour is below the national norm. Violence makes up a bigger slice than usual. Aldershot is an ordinary town with a busier-than-ordinary weekend, not a place to fear.

Police records put Aldershot's crime rate at about 92 per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, with 4,003 crimes recorded over those twelve months. That rate is about 12% above the average for Rushmoor, the borough Aldershot sits in. Both are published figures, calculated on the police's own statistical-area populations, so the rate is not a simple division of the count by the headcount.

Put side by side, Rushmoor as a whole runs at about 82 crimes per 1,000 residents, and Aldershot at about 92. The gap is real and modest, the kind that shows up on a spreadsheet long before it shows up on a walk home.

Aldershot is a compact, busy town. Its neighbourhoods average about 7,300 people per square kilometre, unemployment sits at about 3%, and about 6% of households are overcrowded. Those are descriptions of the place, not explanations for the crime figures, and nobody should read one as the cause of the other. They do say this is a town centre with people in it, not a cul-de-sac with a neighbourhood watch sticker in every window.

The biggest category is violence and sexual offences at about 44% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. It is the largest category almost everywhere, and it is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was hurt, so the headline sounds worse than the category it describes. It is still higher here than the national share, and that is worth knowing. Anti-social behaviour runs the other way, at about 11% of crime locally against 16% nationally, which is lower than the complaints you hear about any town would suggest. Public order offences account for about 9% against 7% nationally, shoplifting about 9% against 8%, criminal damage and arson about 7% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. Apart from violence, the local mix tracks the national one closely enough that the differences are rounding, not a character trait.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is less comforting. Hampshire Constabulary, the force covering Aldershot, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases over the same twelve months, against about 12% nationally. That places it 38th of 42 forces. This is a county-wide figure, set by the force, not a measure of Aldershot's own streets or how safe they are. About 35% of cases across the force were closed with no suspect identified, which is the honest answer to the question "will they catch whoever did it".

Aldershot is safe enough to live in comfortably and not quite safe enough to be smug about: a middling record, a little above the borough, and nothing a sensible buyer should walk away from.
