Brookwood, Surrey

A commuter village the dead got to first·Surrey·South East England

Brookwood exists because Victorian London ran out of room for its dead and started sending them down to Surrey on their own train. The living eventually noticed the same tracks run back to Waterloo, and have been making the return journey ever since, which is more than the original passengers ever managed. The village is hemmed in by heath, army land and a canal, and the cemetery outnumbers it many times over. The neighbours never complain about the parking.
