Is Brookwood, Surrey a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Brookwood, Surrey.

Yes, and boringly so, which is the best kind of safe. Crime runs at well under half the Woking rate. Fewer than two hundred crimes are recorded in a year. Hardly anyone is out of work and hardly anyone is crammed in. The most dangerous thing on an average evening is the towpath in the dark.

The published crime rate for Brookwood in the year from June 2025 to May 2026 is about 34 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 55% below the Woking average. Across those twelve months, 183 crimes were recorded in the area. That's a small enough number that the village's reputation rests less on luck than on the fact that there isn't much here for crime to happen to.

Put the two rates side by side and the gap stops being abstract. Brookwood sits at about 34 per 1,000. Woking as a whole sits at about 75. Same borough, same police force, same council, and yet the borough's figure is more than twice the height of the village's.

The kind of neighbourhood behind those numbers is easy to picture. Brookwood averages about 1,700 people per square kilometre, which is suburban rather than packed. Unemployment is about 3% and overcrowding about 2%. None of that makes crime impossible, and none of it is offered as the reason. It describes a settled place with front gardens, a railway station and not much night-time footfall, which is what these figures usually look like.

The mix needs a health warning before any of it is quoted. With only 183 crimes in the year, a few incidents can move any category by several points, so the breakdown is a snapshot, not a character reference. Violence and sexual offences make up about 44% of Brookwood's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That sounds worse than it reads: it is the biggest category almost everywhere, it covers a wide legal range including common assault without injury, and on a base this small the gap can come from a handful of reports. Anti-social behaviour is about 16% here and about 16% nationally. Other theft, public order, and criminal damage and arson each come in around 7%, all within a point of their national shares. Vehicle crime is about 4% against about 5% nationally. Aside from the one category that swings on small numbers, Brookwood's crime mix looks like everywhere else's, only with far less of it.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the force, not the village. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which places it 30th of 42 forces. About 36% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That's the honest answer to "will they catch them": often not, and that holds anywhere in Surrey, not only here. It says nothing about how likely a crime is in Brookwood itself, and it shouldn't be read that way.

Safety is one of Brookwood's real strengths: the rate is low, the gap with the rest of Woking is wide, and anyone who buys here worried about crime has picked the wrong thing to lose sleep over.
