Camberley

A barracks town that swapped drill for driveways·Surrey·South East England

Camberley started life as Cambridge Town until the Post Office took the name off it, and it has spent the time since making sure nobody mixes it up with anywhere that has spires. The town grew up around Sandhurst, which is why the lawns are edged and there's a faint sense that someone is checking your hedge for regulation height. Daniel Defoe called the heath here good for nothing, and the locals have since spent two centuries covering it in pines, cul-de-sacs, a multiplex and a smart motorway. The London trains are slow enough that residents drive to other towns' stations to catch faster ones, which tells you exactly who Camberley was built for: people whose most emotional relationship is with junction 4.
