Crowthorne

A village that grew up behind other people's high walls·Berkshire·South East England

Crowthorne was a hamlet until the Victorians chose it for a public school and a secure hospital, and the pine forest raised no objections. The postal authorities nearly called it Albertonville, still the most ambitious thing anyone has tried to do to the place. Then the Road Research Laboratory arrived to crash cars on purpose for the nation, and the commuters filled every gap between the three with cul-de-sacs. What's left is a village built around institutions that prize discretion, and the residents took the hint.
