Is Camberley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Camberley.

Camberley is as safe as the borough around it, no more and no less. Its crime rate is almost identical to Surrey Heath's. Very few people are out of work. The mix of offences looks like everywhere else in England. Anyone who calls it dangerous hasn't looked at the figures, and anyone who calls it crime-free is trying to sell a house.

Police records show about 2,800 crimes in Camberley in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 64 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly level with the local-authority average. The rate and the count use different population bases, so the two shouldn't be used to check each other.

For comparison, Surrey Heath as a whole ran at about 63 per 1,000 over the same year. The town and the borough are effectively the same. That's the most honest thing to say about crime here, and an estate agent's "very safe area" is a claim nobody has actually measured.

The town is fairly dense, with about 3,800 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 3% and overcrowding about 3%. None of that makes crime happen or stops it. It just describes a comfortable, built-up commuter town with a proper town centre, and a town centre means there's somewhere for things to happen on a Saturday night.

The offence mix follows the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences are the biggest category at about 36% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That's the largest category almost everywhere, and it's a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour is about 18%, against 16% nationally. Public order offences are slightly higher than average at about 9% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 8% against 7%, and other theft about 8% against 7%. Shoplifting is the one below the national share, at about 7% against 8%. Nothing stands out. The town's crime profile is almost exactly the national average in miniature, which is not the kind of thing people write angry reviews about.

After a report, the picture is less reassuring. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 30th of 42 forces on that measure over the year to May 2026. That's a figure for the whole force, not for Camberley, and it tells you nothing about how likely you are to be a victim. It tells you what happens afterwards. About 36% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. Anyone relying on a stolen bike being found should also buy a good lock.

Camberley is middle-of-the-road for safety, level with its borough in every respect: not a place to worry about, and not one to brag about either.
