What are the schools like in Hindhead?

For anyone buying or renting in Hindhead.

Strong schools, with a school run attached. More than nine in ten of Surrey's graded schools are good or better. The primary school is a short walk away. The secondary school is a drive. Hindhead's education is good, and it needs a car.

Ofsted has graded 159 schools and settings across Surrey, and 147 of them are good or outstanding. That's better than nine in ten. Thirty hold the top grade of outstanding, 7 are rated requires improvement and 5 are inadequate. These figures cover the whole county council area, not Hindhead alone. Another 194 settings have no published grade yet and aren't counted either way. The county's weak schools exist, but there are few enough of them that the choice runs mostly between good and outstanding.

A named school down the road is not a promised place. Admissions follow the council's rules and the school's own criteria, and in a county where good schools are the norm, the popular ones fill quickly. Before you commit to a house, check the admissions arrangements for the specific school, and check where last year's offers actually reached. The estate agent's "close to good schools" is a line in a listing, not an offer letter.

Two primaries anchor the local picture. Beacon Hill Primary School serves the Beacon Hill end of Hindhead, and Grayshott Church of England Controlled Primary School sits across the county line in Grayshott. In the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling, the nearest primary is about 13 minutes' walk away on average, or about 7 minutes by car. Most mornings, walking is quicker than finding somewhere to park at the gate.

Secondary school is where the geography starts to cost you. On the same modelling, the nearest secondary is about 14 minutes by car, 34 minutes by public transport and 47 minutes on foot. That turns every weekday morning for the next seven years into a small logistics exercise. The bus times come from 2019 and age as routes change, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

The rest of the local list is a mixed bag of names. Amesbury School and St Edmund's School both appear locally, along with OneSchool Global UK's Hindhead Campus. The Undershaw Education Trust takes its name from Undershaw, the house where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles. Check each one's status, admissions and fees for yourself, because a local name tells you nothing about which of them your child could get into.

Schools are one of Hindhead's real strengths. The quality is there, and the only real cost is the drive to secondary.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
