Chingford

East London's last stop, and it knows it·Greater London·London

Chingford is where the line from Liverpool Street runs out of ideas and Epping Forest takes over, a postcode for people who wanted to leave London without the bother of leaving. Henry VIII built a grandstand on Chingford Plain in 1543 so he could watch deer being hunted without getting his boots muddy, and the area's relationship with the countryside has followed that model ever since. Even the obelisk on Pole Hill, put up to mark true north for Greenwich, ended up off the line once the meridian moved. London on the council tax bill, Essex in every other respect, and slightly off-centre about both.
