Woodford

East London that still thinks it's in Essex·Greater London·London

Woodford spent most of a thousand years in Essex and has never fully accepted the transfer. Wealthy Londoners began building mansions here in the fifteenth century to be near the forest where royalty hunted, and the arrangement has barely changed, except the mansions are now flats and the hunting is for a seat on the Central line. The North Circular runs through the middle like a moat that never quite worked, and both halves still give their address as Essex when they think nobody from Walthamstow is listening.
