Walthamstow

Where the Victoria line gives up and the sourdough takes over·Greater London·London

Walthamstow is where Hackney moved once it had a baby and a mortgage adviser. William Morris was born here and spent his life arguing that ordinary things deserve to be beautiful, and the town has taken him at his word: the market still sells socks by the bundle a short walk from a taproom on an industrial estate charging serious money for a sour beer. The Victoria line ends here, which estate agents sell as a commute and locals know is the only reason anyone gets a seat. Both crowds are convinced the other one arrived last.
