Chingford's schools are one of the best reasons to buy here. All but two of the graded schools in the borough are good or better. Seven are outstanding. None is inadequate. The difficulty is winning a place, and that is decided by the council's rules on distance and priority.
Across Waltham Forest, Ofsted has graded 25 schools with a published overall grade, and 23 of them are good or better, which leaves very little at the bottom of the table. Seven are rated outstanding and 16 good. Two require improvement, and none is inadequate. Those counts cover the whole borough, from Chingford down through Walthamstow and Leyton, so they describe the authority's schools more than the handful closest to any one front door. Another 46 settings in the borough hold no published grade yet, and they sit outside those counts entirely. A parent in Waltham Forest who comes away disappointed has had to work at it.
Places are handed out under Waltham Forest's published admissions rules, and living near a school, even close enough to hear the bell, earns a priority on the council's list without securing a place on it. The Department for Transport's modelling from 2019 put the typical home in Chingford about eight minutes' walk from the nearest primary and about 16 minutes from the nearest secondary. Those are short walks, and with good schools that close, plenty of other families have done the same sum. Ask the council for its published allocation history on the schools you care about and see how far from the gates the last places went in recent years. Strong schools in a borough of owner-occupiers mean the offers in spring are argued over street by street.
A few names say most of what matters. Chingford Foundation School is the secondary carrying the town's name, and David Beckham went there after Chase Lane Primary School, which gives both an alumni list few heads would complain about. South Chingford Foundation School covers the other end of the town, and Highams Park School serves the streets around Highams Park station. At primary level, Chingford CofE Primary School is the one carrying the town's name, with schools such as Yardley Primary School and Whitehall Primary School among the others spread through the residential streets. Heathcote School & Science College adds another secondary within reach. Grades for individual schools change with each inspection and belong on the council's and Ofsted's own pages. The rest of the local register is primaries and specialist provision, and none of the schools nearby that have closed in recent years should turn up on anyone's shortlist.
Chingford gives a family a borough where good schools are the rule and the bad ones barely exist. The only real test parents face here is the admissions list, and the schools themselves pass theirs.
