Thamesmead

London's future, as drawn in 1967, parked on a marsh·Greater London·London

Thamesmead was designed by planners who believed lakes would calm the teenagers, which says a lot about their faith in water and not much about their faith in teenagers. They put the living rooms upstairs in case the Thames came back for its marsh, then gave the place three prisons on one side, a Victorian sewage works on the other and no station anywhere in between. The Elizabeth line stops at Abbey Wood, a bus ride away, and the Docklands Light Railway extension was first proposed in 2016, which has given residents a lot of bus journeys to think it over.
