Castle Green, London

A castle-sized name on a council-estate budget·Greater London·London

Castle Green is named after a castle that was only ever a house in fancy dress, and it was knocked down just before the Second World War, so even the pretence is long gone. In its place came Becontree, the council estate built to give soldiers home from the trenches a front door and a strip of garden, and those terraces still do that job without asking anyone to admire them. Estate agents will try to sell you the name. What you actually get is a hard-working bit of London that kept the gardens and lost the turrets, which for most buyers is the right way round.
