Who lives in Castle Green, London?

For anyone buying or renting in Castle Green, London.

Castle Green is home to young families on a council-built estate, and most of them rent. The typical resident is in their mid-thirties. Around six in ten households rent, and about a third rent from a social landlord. About one household in five is a lone parent with children. The estate was built as public housing, and a large part of it is still public housing today.

Castle Green has about 45,000 residents in about 15,400 households, and every population figure below comes from the 2021 Census. About 42% of households own their home, about 21% rent privately and about 36% rent from a social landlord. A century after the estate was built as public housing, the public landlord still owns a large part of it.

The median age is 34, and about 30% of residents are aged between 25 and 44. The population is young, and most of it is old enough to have children at the local primary.

Household income is modelled at about £64,000 a year before tax, averaged across the area for the financial year to March 2023. That is a gross household figure, often from more than one earner, and it describes the year it was modelled for.

Families with children make up most of the household mix. About 23% of households are couples with children and about 21% are lone parents. About 22% are people living alone, and the single pensioners, about 9% of all households, are part of that group.

About 30% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 25% have no formal qualifications and about 4% are full-time students. With so few students, there's no college crowd changing the feel of the place in term time, and the mix is set by working families.

About 83% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Barking and Dagenham, the borough as a whole, has a preventable death rate worse than the England average and a smoking rate similar to it. Both are borough-wide figures, and neither describes any one street or household in Castle Green.

Measured by income, qualifications and the borough's health record, Castle Green's population figures come out poorly. The people behind those figures are young families in an estate built for families, and the households have very little money to spare.
