East Ham

Proper London, with nobody pretending otherwise·Greater London·London

East Ham's name comes from the Old English for a dry patch of land between marshes, which is the kind of claim the Environment Agency now reads with its glasses on. The council built itself an Edwardian town hall with a clock tower and then moved to the docks, and West Ham United played just inside the border for decades before leaving for the London Stadium, so the place has had plenty of practice at being left. It took it well. The parish church has been holding services since the twelfth century and has outlasted everyone who thought they were the main attraction.
