Stratford, London

A shopping centre that grew a town around it·Greater London·London

Stratford is named after a ford on a Roman road, and it is still mostly a place people pass through, these days while changing trains. The Olympics left behind a park, a stadium West Ham now calls home and a Westfield big enough to need its own weather, while the older shopping centre stayed stranded on its 1960s traffic island like a relative nobody invited to the wedding. The pub opposite St John's dropped "King of Prussia" from its name in 1914, and the locals still call it The Prussian. That tells you how well Stratford takes to being rebranded.
