Street, Somerset

A Quaker town that found retail instead·Somerset·South West England

Street is where Clarks stopped making shoes and started selling everyone else's at a discount, and the town has been quietly living off that pivot ever since. It sits two miles from Glastonbury, which means it gets the crystal-shop overspill without any of the credit, and it has a private school for the children of people who could buy the town outright and a comprehensive for the children of everyone who works in it, sharing a postcode and almost nothing else. The Quakers who built the place wanted temperance, industry and moral improvement; what they got was a retail park with a Cotswold Outdoor and a car park that fills by ten on a Saturday. Fair trade, on balance.
