Somerton, Somerset

Handsome, unhurried, and long since finished with ambition·Somerset·South West England

Somerton was briefly the county town of Somerset, gave the county its name, then spent the next seven hundred years being overtaken by places nobody has heard of either. What is left is a market square with a roofed cross in the middle of it, a ring of villages that all sound like they were invented for a radio drama, and a rate of change measured in centuries. The BBC once dressed the square up as a First World War town and barely had to move anything. Come for the golden stone, stay because leaving requires a car and a reason.
