Langport

A market town built to argue with a river·Somerset·South West England

Langport is two towns stacked on a hill, one built to be defended and one built to sell things off a barge, and the bit by the river has spent four hundred years quietly sinking backwards into the causeway. The houses on Bow Street lean away from the road like they have seen what the Parrett does in February and would rather not discuss it. This is a place that had its one great historical afternoon in 1645, watched the Royalist cavalry set fire to the lower town on the way out, and then decided that was probably enough excitement. If you want somewhere the water is a talking point rather than a threat, there are drier towns going.
