Ilminster

Bypassed on purpose, and quietly smug about it·Somerset·South West England

Ilminster is a town that got out of the way of the traffic and never quite came back. The bypass arrived in 1988 and took the noise with it, which the town describes as a rescue and everyone under forty experiences as a very long Tuesday. What's left is honey-coloured stone, a market that has been running since the Normans could be bothered to write it down, and a high street where the most dramatic thing to happen this decade was a change of tenant. If you want a place where nothing happens, this is the good version of that, and it will bore the life out of anyone who needs a reason to leave the house after six.
