Merriott

Coined the word nursery, then had a lie-down·Somerset·South West England

Merriott gave England the word nursery, back when everyone else was still calling it a field with plants in it, and it has been quietly gardening its way through seven centuries since. The village burnt down in 1811 and rebuilt itself in hamstone, which is the most Somerset response to a disaster imaginable. Crewkerne is close enough for a Tesco run and Yeovil close enough to remind you why you left it. Nothing much happens here, and the people who moved in did the sums on exactly that.
