Crewkerne
Crewkerne spent the medieval period getting rich on cloth and sailcloth for the Navy, then spent the next two centuries quietly not needing to do anything else about it. What is left is a hamstone market town with a Waitrose, a fifteenth-century church, and one of the country's smallest car manufacturers turning out track weapons in a shed, which is a stranger set of facts than the place lets on. It sits on the London line, so people arrive expecting a commuter dormitory and find a town that clocks off early, closes on Sunday, and has no interest in explaining itself. Nobody moves here by accident, and nobody who does stay is in a hurry to leave.
