Is Crewkerne a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Crewkerne.

Yes, and by a margin that holds up. Recorded crime here runs about a fifth below the county average. The categories that dominate are the ones that dominate everywhere. Nothing in the numbers describes a town where anyone checks the car twice before bed. The quieter problem is what happens afterwards, because when something does occur the chances of a charge are the same modest chances as everywhere else in the country.

The police.uk neighbourhood figures record 626 crimes across the area in the twelve months to May 2026, alongside a published rate of about 75 per thousand people. The count and the rate come from different population bases, so the rate is the number worth quoting and the count is context rather than arithmetic to be checked.

Somerset as a whole ran at about 93 per thousand over the same twelve months. Crewkerne at about 75 sits roughly 19% below that, which is the sort of gap that shows up in how a place feels rather than in anything anyone talks about at the school gate.

The neighbourhood texture behind those numbers is unsurprising. Density averages about 3,140 people per square kilometre across the area's neighbourhoods, unemployment sits at about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of that causes anything on its own, and anyone drawing straight lines between those three figures and the crime rate is doing sociology with a ruler. It does describe a settled, low-pressure sort of place, which is what most buyers are actually asking about when they ask this question.

On the mix, violence and sexual offences account for about 40% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide statutory range, including common assault where nobody is hurt, so quoting it on its own makes any town in England sound like a war zone. Anti-social behaviour is about 17% locally against about 16% nationally, close enough to be the same. Public order sits at about 10% against about 7% nationally, and criminal damage and arson at about 9% against about 7%. Shoplifting is about 8% in both. Other theft is about 5% here against about 7% nationally.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and a less flattering one. Avon and Somerset Constabulary charged a suspect in about 11% of cases over the same twelve months, against about 12% nationally, which places the force 24th of the 42 in England and Wales. About 30% of cases were closed with nobody identified at all. That is a force-wide figure covering a large area and carries no signal about any particular street. It also answers a different question from the crime rate: not how likely something is to happen to you, but how much good reporting it will do when it does. The two get blended constantly, usually by people trying to make a quiet town sound frightening.

The honest summary is a town noticeably safer than the county around it, by enough of a margin to matter, and unremarkable in precisely the way buyers claim to want before they arrive and start complaining that nothing happens.
