South Petherton

Peaked in cauldrons, coping admirably ever since·Somerset·South West England

South Petherton has been quietly important since a Saxon king built a palace here and then, sensibly, everyone stopped talking about it. What remains is honey-coloured stone, a church tower that outranks anything else for miles, and a village that treats the A303 roaring past its southern edge as background weather rather than a connection to the outside world. It is the kind of place where the pace is set by whoever is walking to the shop, and where people who arrive expecting Somerset-as-lifestyle-brand discover it is just Somerset, getting on with it, unbothered by whether they stay.
