Cheddar
Cheddar gave its name to the most popular cheese on the planet and now has precisely one producer left in the village actually making it, which is a masterclass in watching your best idea walk off without you. Every summer half a million people drive in to stare at a big hole in the rock, buy fudge they did not need, and leave before the pubs get going. Britain's oldest complete skeleton was pulled out of that gorge, so the locals can fairly claim their ancestors saw the tourist traffic coming nine thousand years ago and stayed anyway.
