Axbridge

Too poor to modernise, now too pretty to afford·Somerset·South West England

Axbridge is what happens when a town has one genuinely spectacular medieval square and then quietly stops trying, which is the most sensible thing any place in Somerset has ever done. It made its money in cloth, lost it, and the poverty was so thorough it forgot to knock anything down, so the whole lot survived by accident and now sells for a fortune. The Tudor building on the corner is called King John's Hunting Lodge despite King John never hunting there and it not being a lodge, and nobody has corrected this in several hundred years because the name is better than the truth. If you want a place that is doing something, go elsewhere. This one finished.
