What do houses cost in Street, Somerset?

For anyone buying or renting in Street, Somerset.

About £266,000 for a typical house, which in Somerset terms is close to bargain territory. A detached house runs to roughly £422,500. A flat comes in around £126,250. The market is busy enough that you are not waiting months for something to appear. This is a town where an ordinary salary still buys an ordinary house, which is not a sentence that survives many postcodes these days.

The Land Registry's records for the year to May 2026 put the median sale at around £266,000 across 144 transactions. The split by type does most of the work in understanding that figure. Detached homes came in at around £422,500 across 30 sales, semi-detached at around £280,000 across 47, terraces at around £254,000 across 39, and flats at around £126,250 across 28. That flat figure is the outlier worth noticing: the gap between a flat and a detached house here is wider than the median alone would suggest, and the median sits nearer the semi-detached number because semis are what Street mostly sells.

On direction, the published house-price index for the area recorded a rise of around 3% over the twelve months to May 2026, with a monthly movement of under 1%. Flats went the other way over the same period, down by around 1%. That flat figure is small enough to be noise rather than a story, and anyone buying a flat here on the assumption it will behave like the houses should sit with that number for a minute first.

Council tax lands low. Band B is the most common band in the town and around 46% of dwellings sit in bands A or B, which is a straightforwardly working-town valuation profile. A band D property attracts an annual bill of around £2,561, and since band D is above the local norm, most households here pay less than that.

Renting is a blunter picture because the figure available is a local-authority one. Typical private rent across the Somerset area runs at about £990 a month, which is a mean from the Office for National Statistics rent index covering the whole county rather than a Street-specific number, and rents across the area rose by around 4% over the year to April 2026. By size, the same source puts one-bedroom homes at around £670 a month, two-bedrooms at around £886, three-bedrooms at around £1,101 and four-or-more at around £1,576. Treat all of it as the shape of the county market, not the asking price of a particular two-bed off the High Street.

On affordability, the Office for National Statistics modelled gross household income before tax at around £48,400 for the financial year to March 2023. That is a dated figure and it describes that year rather than today, but set against a median sale around £266,000 it puts Street in the category of towns where a two-earner household is not immediately laughed out of a mortgage appointment. A single buyer chasing a detached house will find the arithmetic less friendly. A couple buying a terrace or a semi will find it works.

Price per square metre lands at around £3,225 across the sales that could be matched to an energy certificate's floor area, which is around 86% of them. The typical matched property came with around 85 square metres of floor space. That is a useful sanity check when a listing photograph makes a room look bigger than the plan admits.

On bedrooms, the 2021 Census records around 41% of Street's homes as three-bedroom, around 25% two-bedroom, around 21% with four or more, and around 14% one-bedroom. Three-bedroom family housing is the default here in a way it is not in most towns with this price level, and that is the single most useful thing to know before you start filtering listings.

Value is where Street is genuinely strong. You are buying a market-town house at a price that a good many prettier Somerset addresses would consider a deposit, and the only thing you give up for it is the postcard.
