Royal Wootton Bassett

The M4's politest exit, with a high street attached·Wiltshire·South West England

Royal Wootton Bassett is where two of the country's great railway lines split, and no train on either has stopped for it since 1965. The town earned its "Royal" by standing still on its own high street with enough dignity for the whole country to notice, and it has kept that low profile ever since. Swindon sits down the road, close enough for the salary and far enough that nobody here has to say "Swindon" when asked where they live.
