Chiseldon

Swindon on the envelope, the downs out the window·Wiltshire·South West England

Chiseldon is a Swindon postcode that has spent its whole life facing Marlborough. It sits on the lip of the downs with the M4 a mile behind it, close enough to hear and far enough to pretend otherwise, which is the deal most people who move here were shopping for. Its one great discovery was a pile of Iron Age cooking pots, the biggest ever found in Europe, and the British Museum drove off with the lot. The best-remembered complaint in its history came from a soldier at the old army camp, kept awake by the camp's St Bernard, and that tells you how Chiseldon likes its nights.
