Chiseldon is safe, and safer than the borough on its envelope. Crime runs at about half the Swindon rate. Hardly anyone is out of work. Hardly anyone is crammed in. The borough's average belongs to somebody else's streets.
Police recorded 181 crimes across the area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 46 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 48% below the Swindon average. For a village with a motorway junction up the road and an A-road through the middle, that is a quiet year's work, and the traffic produces more complaints than the crime does.
The Swindon-wide rate over the same year was about 88 per 1,000. Put the two side by side and the gap is the whole story: Chiseldon runs at about 46, the borough at about 88. Buyers who screen out "Swindon" as a search term are screening out one of the calmer places in it.
The texture fits the numbers. Population density averages about 2,090 people per square kilometre across the village's statistical areas, unemployment sits at about 2%, and about 3% of households are overcrowded. That describes a settled place where most people have a job, a driveway and room to breathe. None of it proves anything about crime on its own, but it is not the setting for a crime wave.
The mix needs handling carefully, because the totals are small enough that a handful of incidents moves a share by several points. Violence and sexual offences made up about 35% of recorded crime, the same as the national share of about 35%, and that category is broad enough to include common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour was about 20% against about 16% nationally. Burglary was about 10% against about 4% nationally, which reads alarming until you remember how few crimes sit behind it; a couple of break-ins in a year shifts that line noticeably. Public order and criminal damage were each about 9%, against about 7% nationally, and other theft about 6% against about 7%. Treat the burglary figure as a reason to fit a decent lock and read next year's numbers, not as the character of the village. The people who quote percentages without the totals behind them are the ones who write the frightening forum posts.
What happens after a report is a separate question, and Wiltshire Police answers it for the whole county, not for Chiseldon. The force charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which puts it 32nd of 42 forces. About 34% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. That says nothing about how safe the village is. It says that if something does happen, the odds of someone being charged are ordinary at best.
Safety is one of Chiseldon's real strengths, with crime at about half the borough rate and not much to disturb the peace. The risk worth planning for is the one on your own doorstep, and the lock handles that.
