Good, and pleasantly free of drama. Four primaries serve the town. One secondary takes the lot. Most of the county's schools hold a good grade or better. Parents here get to skip the part where education becomes a blood sport.
The six mainstream state primaries around here averaged a maths score of 104 at the end of primary school. The town's own set is small enough to learn in an afternoon: Wootton Bassett Infants' School and Noremarsh Junior School take children in two stages, while Longleaze Primary School and St Bartholomew's Primary Academy run the whole way through. The typical walk to a primary is about 11 minutes, which means the morning car queue outside the gates is a choice some parents make anyway.
At secondary level the area has one mainstream state school, and its pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score was 51. For the town itself, that means Royal Wootton Bassett Academy on the north-west edge. The walk averages about 24 minutes, or about 10 by car, and the car version is the one teenagers will lobby for from the first wet Monday. Families who want to look further have Malmesbury School and The Ridgeway School & Sixth Form College within reach, though choosing either turns the school run into a small commute.
Ofsted's grades here cover the whole of Wiltshire, not the town alone. Across the county, 106 of the 128 graded settings are good or better, which is roughly five in every six. Six are outstanding, 20 require improvement and 2 are inadequate. Plenty of other settings hold no published grade yet and say nothing either way. The county figure tells you the local authority runs a decent system. It doesn't tell you which classroom your child ends up in, and an inspection report is a snapshot of a week, however much an estate agent treats it as a lifetime guarantee.
A school's name on the property listing is not a place at the school. Admissions follow the council's rules, not the agent's description, so check them against the address you are buying before you exchange. Buyers who assume that living near a school means getting into it tend to find out otherwise when the offer letter arrives, and by then they already own the house.
Schooling is one of the town's real strengths: solid primaries within walking distance, one secondary that takes the whole town, and a county system that mostly does its job without fuss. Parents who find that dull are welcome to drive further for something more exciting.
